Beach Combing Workshops with Barbara Priestman Academy
Information
Date: 5/14 July 2014
Location: Barbara Priestman Academy, Sunderland
Category: Events
A beach combing and litter picking event with a group of about thirty volunteers, including 6th formers and their teachers from Barbara Priestman Academy in Sunderland. The event combined art and ecological issues and was organised with the support of Natural England. Lindisfarne nature warden Laura Scott described the hazards of litter and its damaging effects on the island’s wildlife and then the litter and beach debris was sorted and categorised as potential recycling material. In a follow-up workshop in school, the students transformed the collected items into artworks, did some drawing and performed ‘one minute sculptures’. The process of making was as intriguing as the finished results. The Shelter project organisers are really pleased to have met David Fudge, an inspiring and enthusiastic teacher who has become involved with the project in a number of ways as well as including his students.
